Buzzed Event Final Project

Did you know that nearly 13,000 people are killed each year due to alcohol-related incidents, or how about an estimated 32% of fatal car crashes involve an intoxicated driver or pedestrian. It seems that even though these statistics are increasing yearly people still tend to do it. Is alcohol that addictive that people must drink and drive? It is sad to say that people have to learn the hard way for them to understand the danger that they put themselves in when you drink and drive. A story I feel like everyone should know about is “Went to the Party” by Brett M Christensen, where an innocent young women went to a party and decided to drink sprite instead of alcohol because her mom asked her to, but of course others were drinking alcohol at the party. Young adults, a party, liquor, and driving this sounds like a recipe for disaster, as it was because on her way home a drunk driver from the party crashed into the young lady’s car. The only thing she could do was tell her mom that she loved her through the words of journalist who was there recording everything she said. I encourage anyone who sees this to read this story because it can save life. One day the message will ring a bell and people will stop drinking and driving, but until then I hope everyone makes it home safe from the parties that they attend.

Final Video Project Proposal

Don't Drive and Drink, Think!

David and I will be doing a report on the student body's "Buzzed" event as well as talking about drunk driving.

This podcast will combine both video, audio, and images, and will be mainly focused on the student's trying to prevent harm to their peers, as well as some facts about drunk driving and its risks.

David and I already have a lot of video, and some pictures, but pan to use copyright/royalty free images in order to create an image gallery to accompany audio which will be more informational about drunk driving.

We want to perpetuate the understanding of drunk driving and it's ramifications, and hopefully this video will prevent any future accidents, and help raise awareness around drunk driving and how preventable it is.

Hula Hoop Information

Hula Hooping and It's Place In Society

Hula hooping is an old traditional activity that was said to be created in England back during the 14th century, and hit international fame in the late 1950's.

Traditionally the hoops were made out of willow rattan, grapevines and grass but today they air made out of plastic with creative colors and accessories. "Hula" came from the Hawaiian dance because of the hip movements you have to do in order to keep the toy swirling around your waist.

The "hula hoop" was used by the Native Americans as a form of storytelling dance, as they used over a dozen hoops to create shapes and formations representing symbols, animals, and storytelling elements.

Recently the popularity in hula hoop dancing has increased exponentially, especially in teens and young adults. There is actually a "World Hoop Day" to celebrate hooping and you can find the hooping activity at a couple of festivals.  Today we consider hula hooping a recreational activity.

It creates a steady rhythmic groove when twirling the toy around your waist, neck, arm, or leg so that the hoop doesn't stop twirling. The hoop can provide a simple cardio exercise as it speeds up your heart beat, but also give you the sense of pleasure and fun.

Originally created for pleasure and exercise, the hula hoop was more often sen as a fun play toy, rather than an expression of creativity. But since individualism has become more highly prized in society, many teens scramble to fit in.

Adult hula hoops are about 40 inches and kid’s hula hoops are 12. Hula hoops are being made with certain weights and size due to the advancement in tricks, and modernization of hooping. The heavier and larger hoops are used for slow hooping and body tricks.

Lighter hoops are used for the hoop for fast twirling and quick hand tricks. Hula hoops are used in a glow in the dark circus act using glow sticks and LED technology, they are also used in tricks in which the hula hoop is set on fire through kerosene and professionals are able to hoop.

Since festivals and EDM have become a prominent part of young culture, many young people, and young adults begin using their leisure time to learn hula hooping, poi, and other related activities.

I (Aiden) went to Electric Forest and Camp Bisco my senior year in high school, actually the summer after I'd graduated. It was one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had, both spiritually and mentally.

I'd never been out of state without my parents before, so both experiences fueled my independence. I felt like an adult, and individual amongst this sea of bodies, paint, and bright clothes.

After the festivals, I kept up my interests, even picked up some poi techniques. Poi is a combination of body and wrist movements which controls the direction of two balls, either colored or LED, which are held by rope or cord and spun.

I got the hula hoop pictured, Rainbow Dash, for Christmas last year and since the suns come out, I have been avidly trying to relearn all skills and tricks.  It's been a struggle.

David did really well, keeping his body and legs even, and understanding that the correct hula hooping motion is back and forth with your hips, less of a "bring it around town" motion. He eventually got it on the third try, and kept the hoop on his hips.

The trick, called the vortex, is extremely hard to learn, but easy to master once you've gotten the knack for it. The rule is to use the opposite hand from the way your hoop is going.

You use the motion of the hoop to create the illusion of the hoop moving like a hurricane around you. Once you've mastered getting into the vortex, you can keep trying to get out, and then learn other tricks, like cat eyes, isolation's and others.

Keep practicing, and don't get discouraged! Hoop like nobody is watching!

Video Assignment

Stannard Gymnasium, Lyndon State College, Lyndonville, VT- Today I learned some tips and tricks from my friend David, as well as some of the members of the men’s basketball, The Hornets. I learned proper stance, hand placement, all the sweet moves.

It was a lot of fun working with David, Jojo and Josh because they put up with me so well. I’m terrible at most sports, and basketball is no exception. The guys were very patient, and their pointers made sense. That’s one thing that I like about sports; the logistics of it. If you keep your elbow in an L and use your non-dominant hand to guide the ball, you get more power, more lift, and more control to your throw. It’s like watching a tennis ball hit a wall, and using math/logic to figure out where it’ll land; with the right trajectory and amount of force combined with a keen eye, you can properly make a basket.

There’s certain rituals each person has; Jojo bounces the ball twice, David spins it and brings it around his back, I do a little jig and then kick my heels up. Whatever works; as long as you can properly assess how far you need to throw, and how hard you’ll have to throw.  Really the game all boils down to trajectory, force, and complete self-confidence. Like David said, you have to step up to the line knowing you’ll make it, because it doesn’t matter if you miss, you can always shoot again.

Plus, just having some sort of physical activity in your day to day life is extremely healthy and could even help prevent certain illnesses in the future. Having hobbies at this age is healthy for our personal health, as well as the heath of our relationships; you’ll never meet anybody new if you never do anything new. Even though I felt uncomfortable because I wasn’t at their skill level, the lessons they taught me were simply, yet very easy to remember.

Finally, the last thing that I learned, or re-learned rather, is that perfection is earned, not just rewarded. I wasn’t automatically good because I wanted to me, and the guy were’t automatically super good either; we have to work towards our dreams and goals, and put our time and effort into things we’re passionate about. I had fun, and I made new friends, while trying something new.

Video Discription

The purpose of this video is to show me (Aiden) how to accurately and consistently make free throws. It will also give the guys some time to show off and do some tricks, and give me more pointers.

David-Today w’re in the Stannard Gym, I got a few of my teammates here, and we’re gonna show you some free throws and (routines)

(David introduces friends, being shotting, showing correct form, et ct.)

Jojo- How do you wanna shoot? Underhand or overhand?

Aiden- I wanna shoot overhand, like you guys do; Teach me so I’ll know what I’m doing

Jojo- Which is your dominant hand?
A-Umm. I guess my right…
Jojo-Okay, then put your left hand on the side of the ball to guide it, then place your right hand on top. Spread your fingertips, the throw should be all fingertips
A- So keep my elbows in, fingertips do all the work, feet spread, knees bent?
Jojo- Yeah, however feels more fluid…comfortable

(I shoot a bunch, finally get it)

Josh-Okay, so when I shoot, I walk up to the line, bounce the ball twice with his right, then shoots. (Keeps

D-When stepping up to the free-throw line, you always need to put in the most amount of effort; you can never think about missing, no one is perfect, so even if you miss, keep trying.
-I bounce the ball twice, spin it in my hands, then bring it around my back, then shoot

(David shoots)

D- Perfect way, square your back, plant your legs, keep your elbow in an L shape, ball resting on your palm, then squat, and shoot (extending your arm)

A- okay, so like this
(insert bloopers, failed attempts, David & Friends Laughing)
(Finally makes the shot)

D- Okay Aiden, in order to free throw correctly you need to plant your feet shoulder width apart, knees bent, and loose; remember its all in the wrist

D-For free throws, always remember; elbow, legs, and follow through on your shot. Do that, and you’re good to go.

Vice; Magazine, News, NSFW

Vice is one of my all time favorite publications; I subscribe to both their email news updates, but to their YouTube channel.

My favorite thing about Vice Mag is the freshness; there is always an interesting, new, up-to-date, accurate report. From sports to global politics, to fashion, Vice has it covered.

My first Vice video was about Fashion Week in Columbia; Vice does their own fashion week, but instead of focusing purely on the US, France, and Italy, they focus internationally, in places like Columbia, Tel Aviv, and Niger. In the Columbian video, they not only focus on the fashion, but the politics behind it.

For example, many people believe the stereotype that all people from Columbia and Latin America have nice curves and big booties. this isn't the case for 100% of the people, so by age 15, most girls in Columbia have had plastic surgery, either breast augmentations or butt implants.

Vice brings to light either delicate, or unknown topics, like the Cannibal Warlords of Liberia or the Kingdom of the Little People, an amusement park based entirely around little people. They highlight not only anything cool, interesting, funny or cute, but things that are graphic, hard to watch, and touching.

They also discus things people don't normally discus, thing's that wouldn't be considered polite dinner conversation. Using the tag NSFW (Not Safe For Work), they can publish articles which discuss XXX rated topics.

Vice makes sure to examine all aspects of their report; social, phycological, economic, everything.
They examine all angles, and shine light onto the deeper meaning behind issues.

For example, in Kingdom of the Little People, the reporter goes to the amusement park which is basically self-sufficiently run by little people from all over Asia. Many people don't think the park is appropriate and that it is a mockery of the little people, however, upon interviewing them, all the little people said that they love it in the Kingdom and that it is the only place they feel welcome.

Getting a deeper insider view into issues or places people may not be aware of is a great way to really show people the world we're living in.

Quote of The Week

“Consider that you radiate. At all times. Consider that what you’re feeling right now is rippling outward into a field of is-ness that anyone can dip their oar into. You are felt. You are heard. You are seen. If you were not here, the world would be different. Because of your presence, the universe is expanding.”

IReport Assignment

1. Sign up for an account
2. Look around on the website and write a blog post telling us what you think about the site -- what you like, what you dislike, whether it is a good idea.

Signing up was difficult and the process itself seemed boring and cliché. However, I think iReport could be an amazing tool if utilized correctly.

As a college student, I often feel like I'm in a cocoon, surrounded by brick walls and lectures, where the affairs of the outside world don't concern me. The process of hunting out news and other information is hard; we may not know what to look for, or where even to start looking. If you don't know that there is a crisis in Russia, then you probably aren't going to want to look up Crimea's location or it's resources.

I think iReport has hope because it's almost like the Facebook of news, directed at teens in order to make news and journalism "hip". I think it's a swell idea, especially because people have been saying "Print is dying". Online journalism, and/or blogging, is one way to keep the printed word alive.

Although I find myself filled with hope about iReport, I must admit I was very confused by the whole page. It was too much little text, not enough explanation, or clear ways to save stories to your page. I would love more clarity, even a demo or a walk through, so I could better get my bearings.

I think, once mastered, iReport will soon become the next most popular social media site for teens to locate good, quality news and information.

Also, my personal favorite article :)
Enjoy!

20013-14 Mens Basketball At Lyndon State College It was a pleasure to have coach Joe Krupinski of the Men's Basketball team take time out of his day and do this brief interview. We felt like there was no better person to talk to than the Head Coach himself,if we wanted meaningful insight. He summed up the whole season with a brief 4 minute interview. He first introduced himself as he has been the head coach here at Lyndon for six years. Coach Kruspinski spoke on his teams successful season as they set first time accomplishments like playing a regular season game against the University of Vermont(Division 1). We asked Coach Kruspinski what three words described his team the best and his response was "Passionate, energetic and improved”. He was really in touch with himself, the players, and their abilities. Working with the coach and listening to David talk about basketball made me realize that some people really do have a passion in them; it brings happiness to their lives, and gives them something to look forward to when their down. The pictures really brought that idea home for me, because you can see all the determination and pride in their faces, and you can see how excited the fans are as well. The coach gave us not only his own opinions, but insights as well, which showed me a lot about his passion for the game, as well as his rational, logical plans for the team. To This Day & Slam Poetry Podcast

In this podcast, David and I give some reactions, thoughts, and opinions on Shane Koyczan's slam poem "To This Day". Below is the link to the YouTube video

Slam Poetry is a style of delivery, as well as a genre of poetry. Slam poetry relates to either the originality of the work being presented by the author, and to the style in which they're delivering it. The authors tone and message in the poem are most important. Usually slam poetry is used to convey a message, such as Shane Koyczan's message in "To This Day" which is anti-bullying. Slam poetry is pretty recent to the scene, as it became more popular amongst teens because it it a fast paced, emotion fueled way to convey the deepest parts of ones soul. Slam poetry is now a competitive sport, where contestants are judged based on the poem, it's originality, as well as it's structure, tone, and feel. “A poetry slam is a competition at which poets read or recite original work. These performances are then judged on a numeric scale by previously selected members of the audience."

Even though it is a competitive scene, Slam poets are known for the compassion and their humility, as well as their tenacity, and ability to touch on hard subjects without seeming condescending or rude. Poets, such as Andrea Gibson, use personal stories to fuel their poetry, adding a human element to the story. All slam poetry must be original, which puts a lot of stain on the poets because they want to avoid sounding cliche or monotonous. But because Andrea and Shane both underwent so much opposition and hatred as children, their poetry, in my opinion, is raw and breathtaking; it forces one to self examine their stance, either as a victim or the antagonizer. Both Andrea and Shane use their work to inspire those around them, to share a message that may not be pleasant, but certainly is necessary.

Rough Outline Podcast

To This Day Project is the focus of my podcast

 Shane Koyczan wrote “To This Day” as a poem to raise awareness about bulling. In our podcast we will discuss if the impact created by this video is productive, effective, and well-balanced, or if it relies more on the shock and awe of the animation.In the podcast we will discuss;

-personal opinion of the video; what we liked, didn’t like, how it made us feel, ect.

-reference “pork chop”, “beware of dog”, ect -discuss how his personal experience set the tone; his experience mirrors that of so many others

-the vivid imagery that Koyczan, as well as his tone and pace really grasps the reader, and forces them to self examine

-in most cases, people will fall into two different categories; the listener will either relate to Shane, or relate to the bullies. In the case of the latter (if one relates to bullies), this video can open their eyes and show them a new perspective

-because it is presented in such a visually stimulating way, it hooks the listener in and doesn’t let them go

-compare this video with other spoken word artists and see who did better and why

Podcast Review

Boiler Room

The Boiler Room podcast is a weekly release of a compilation of music from new and upcoming dubstep, trap, or electronic artist's. They bring together music from all over the country, and have actually accepted and signed one of my friends Hobbz. I really enjoy listening to this type of music because it makes me want to dance, and have a good time. Boiler Room brings well-made music into a beautifully orchestrated set ranging from half an hour to an hour and a half. These sets range in not only artist and their location, but also in their variety of music styles, and the pace and tone of their music. This variety is sweet, but its poison; it kills you to wait that week to hear it again ;) My personal favorites are RL Grime and the Salva Boiler Room LA set. Around 10 of these podcasts are downloaded onto my laptop because they're too big of files to put on my IPhone.

Low End Theory

I also subscribed to the Low End Theory podcast, which is the same concept at Boiler Room, except LET (Low End Theory) is much more underground music; its full of artists that would make hipsters go "You probably haven't heard of them". The Low End theory is actually them name of a club, where people will come to do live sets, which gets turned into a weekly podcast. LET also mixes in sets of very famous artists, and the tone and pace of the music changes drastically throughout the set. LET picks favorites, like Gaslamp Killer, who has been in the game for quite some time. He's one of my personal favorites, so I listened to episodes 19, and 21, because they're my favorites, and have the most variety and in my opinion, the better mixes. Again, this type of set belongs on a laptop because there is too much data for a MP3 device

Hunting Accident Escalates into Aggravated Assault (Albany, VT)

Conrad Masse, 76, of Craftsbury is one of two men investigated in a hunting related shooting accident in Albany Vermont, has been issued a citation to appear before the Orleans Supreme Court on the 28th of February to answer the charges of Aggravated Assault.

In addition to his appearance in Court, Masse was also issued tickets by the Fish and Game wardens for shooting from the Road, Having a Loaded Rifle in his Vehicle, and Not Having Proper Display of Permits for the bear hounds he and his accomplice, Wayne Goff 58 of Wolcott, were in possession of.

The two men were hunting bear together, using radio telemetry and GPS to track their dogs who had been previously set on the bears scent. The two men drove down Urie Road in an attempt to head the bear off as it was forced to cross by the dogs.

Goff exited the car first, and positioned himself on the road where he could see if the bear was crossing, while Masse drove exactly 541 feet away and parked the car, also positioning himself where he could see the bear as soon as it emerged. Both men were facing each other, with a large gap between them to channel the bear.

When the bear did cross the road, it did so between the two men. Masse fired his Remington .30-.60 rifle about three times, one bullet striking the bear, one hitting a tree, and the final bullet penetrated Goff's stomach and became lodged in his pelvic area.

Goff was rushed to North Country Hospital, and then was moved to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center for surgery and treatment. However, Goff was released and is reportedly in stable condition, but will give no comment at this time.

This investigation was the joint efforts of the Vermont State Police and game wardens from the Vermont Department of Fish & Game, which has been ongoing since October of last year, is finally coming to a close.

TV Website Assignment

The first TV Website I looked into was CBC News Canada, and I was very impressed with their website. They have ads located on the top of the page, and subtly throughout the site, which draws attention to the ads, but doesn't detract from the news. They also have a sidebar with links to specific regions and territories of Canada and their respective news. They have many videos, however they're all located halfway down the page in one small sidebar, which could be greatly improved. However they do update stories as more details are revealed, keeping their news current. The headings are bold and grasping, and the blurbs provide a nice hook, giving the critical information just like we learned but also tempting the reader for more. Although the highlights on the page are about Canadian news, at the bottom of the sight there is worldwide news stories, including the Sochi Olympics.
CBC News Canada

The second was Sky News Australia, one of the main sources of online news for Australia. Their page is grabbing, with a headlines bar at the top for breaking news, and a huge slideshow of all their most recent news stories. Next to the slideshow is a sidebar with links to their top stories and videos. And under that is their top watched/most important video clips, which is placed very clearly in the viewers sight. Then, the site goes through several subgenres, shall we call them, of news, from "World" to "Sports" and so on. There are sidebars for "Latest News" and "Most Popular", as well as links to their online Sky News merch shop and one that will bring you directly to sign up for their daily newsletter. This site if FULL of links and videos and their writing is crisp, clean, and to the point, albeit the site does have a flair for the dramatic. Overall, I was much more impressed with Sky News

Where Am I Going?

Lately, I've been feeling sort of aimless, like I'm drifting through my day to day activities, mindlessly.
Like I've lost that spark, that fire that makes people reach for their guitar or their sketchpad; I no longer have something that I'm "good at".
People are good at things, whether it be baking, or taking apart a bike, or painting. There's a certain activity that makes one feel good, to feel whole, and I've lost that.
Walking the halls of HAC, I see all this beautiful artwork, all this flowing creativity, and I feel like theres a wall in my mind between my creativity, and myself now.
I want to get back to doing what makes me feel good, something that makes me tick, something that puts the fire back in my belly.
I want to create, I want to become a God of fine jewelry or of short stories so intense that grown men weep.
I want to feel at home within myself once more, and I think the first step is reigniting my "pilot light" so to speak
I need to get out there, and find myself and my passion

Shocking Death in Car Crash, Lyndonville VT

Minor Car Accident Turns Lethal in Downtown Lyndonville

Tragedy struck Lyndonville VT this afternoon, as Annie Coulter, 82, lost control of her car and crashed into the front window of local eatery Central Restaurant, leading to the unexpected death of a patron.

Mrs. Coulter claims that she swerved to avoid a pedestrian heading south on Depot Street, and that her brakes failed before she could stop. Mrs. Coulter's car broke through the front window of the restaurant, injuring Mr. John Barker in the process.

Although Mr. Barker's injuries from the impact were not fatal, he was reported to have suffered multiple lacerations from the shattered glass.

Witnesses say that Barker approached the car with the intention of helping Mrs. Coulter out from the driver's seat, she had suffered minor lacerations and bruising, when he began complaining of pain in his chest, which ultimately lead him to collapse.

EMT quickly arrived at the Restaurant but were unfortunately too late to save Mr. Barker, who died from a heart attack at the scene.

John Barker, aged 59 from Concord VT, was known by friends, family, and the community as a kindhearted, loving man, remembered for his honorable service in the Middle East and as a member of his Neighborhood Watch Program.

Mrs. Coulter is expected to testify in court tomorrow about the events of the case, as Barker's family is attempting to sue her on the grounds of Vehicular Manslaughter.

Pimp My Blog

I've had the idea for an inspirational blog for some time, and adding links to the page wasn't very hard.
I chose the background because it's subtle, and calming, but also very upbeat and positive; we can all visualize our struggles, fears, ect. as a huge mountain looming over us, yet it is one we must overcome, and eventually one will discover the beauty in our fears.
Because I've used blogger before, I was familiar with setup and style, so customizing the font wasn't hard at all.
Also, adding the slideshow on the top to filter in some positive, calming pictures brings the page together nicely.
By offering a list of my favorite links, it promotes not only my blog but others as well.
The medias attention towards positivity and good body image is on the rise which is such a good thing; together we all can raise awareness and our own personal vibrations

Rechoosing Yourself

I believe that we are our own Universe; we are the masters of all we see, feel, and smell. As light, sentient beings, we must embrace our powers in order to fully achieve happiness and complete unity of the soul and mind.
By choosing to stay on a path of fear, anger, and depression, you become scared, depressed and angry; your choices, conscious and unconscious, greatly affect your outlook and your perception.
By choosing to be accepting, positive, and warm you will soon notice yourself embodying these ideals. This switch in paradigm is very difficult, because for many people they've been stuck in the same mindset for too long, so the change may seem impossible.
But once you've broken free from your negative shackles, one may begin to dance in the light of happiness

Rechoose Yourself

Vulnerability

This video is one of the Ted Talks, a medium for great minds of our nation to come together and voice their opinions, and what they've learned whilst on their life journey.
This talk is about vulnerability, and how as humans, in order to a whole, happy, functioning human being, we must accept our flaws and be open with one another, despite our fears and misconceptions.
I find this video to be very motivational and educational and I encourage you all to watch it

Inspiration

I'm starting this blog in hopes that my words and actions will resonate with all other beings, so that you all may learn from me and I from you. This blog will act as both a personal catalyst for my own improvement and inspiration, as well as it being part of my MultiMedia Storytelling class.

"The hardest part of learning is accepting what you've done wrong. The path to truth is thick with weeds, razor sharp vines and thorns. But in order to truly know ones self, you must follow the path to truth, because you will emerge beautiful and strong and truly yourself.
